150   CAPRICIOUS KISS

So many aspects of my life
I could not rearrange…
A constant quest
/      for a major change
With so few opportunities.

Friends said,
/      “Get out more often;
What you need is romance!”
But I was afraid
/      to take that chance,
Unwilling to risk
/      what little I had.

Then to my life came a goddess
For whom love was forbidden.
My feelings had to be
/      carefully hidden –
For years I endured alone…

When the passing of time
/      released her,
I traded routine
/      for whimsical bliss.
With that first capricious kiss,
She changed my life forever!

151     BIT PART                                                  *****

Perhaps in fantasy worlds
May the men
/    encounter girls
With such enticing
/    multiple charms –
Ideal dawns will catch me
/    asleep in your arms

For never in this life
Shall I be like
/    the window shopper
Who often looks
/    but seldom buys –
I’ll fan the fire reflected
/    by your smouldering eyes

Yet within my deepening soul
I know passion plays
/   a minor role
In the bigger drama
/    of dreams come true –
It merely skims the surface
/    of my love for you.

152     YOUR CRAZY LOVE

Working my way through life with a heavy load,
I was a long lost runner on a lonely road
Until by chance I found your crazy love.
Now it brightens the day, it lets me unwind –
I’m spinning, I’m falling, I’m losing my mind!
A lover, a teacher, my very best friend –
Your crazy love, it’s got me going again.

My world’s in a whirl when I’m at your side,
In daydreams or night dreams, to the stars we ride.
In recalling all the things we’ve done or said,
I know the stoplight to heaven has never been red.

Like a single rose in an ugly field of weeds,
You possess enough beauty to fulfill my needs.
And as you reach to my soul by touching my hand,
The rose spreads our fragrance throughout the land.

Now your face shows a silly smile, a joyful tear,
And those happily foolish dreams have become quite clear:
I have decided to keep your crazy love.
So you’re wrapping yourself around the things I do,
And I’m climbing, I’m sinking, I’ve fallen for you!
My lover, my teacher, my very best friend –
Your crazy love, it’s got me going again.

153      ALL I DESIRE                                                        *****

Some men chase dreams of the world –
To date a movie star, to own a acing car,
Money in the bank, a high social rank.
Now to each his own, I always say,
But I have no interest in the games they play.

Loving nights to spend alone with you –
Those moonlight walks, quiet midnight talks
By a gentle fire, that’s all I desire.
They can have the joy their world brings,
For in you I have found the important things.

154    HIS FIRST-BORN SON

It was love that he gave to his first-born son:
When I was weak and tired, he gave me strength to carry on;
When I was ignorant, he gave me knowledge of right and wrong.
When I needed wisdom, security or help with a task,
It seemed all I ever had to do was ask,
And he was always right there for me.
In a million different ways he cared for me.
I guess when he looked in my eyes, he saw his own reflection,
So without pushing or pulling he provided direction.
I was free to move, to grow, to learn.
Still he was there at every turn
Telling me without words I was always the one.
Yes, it was love that he gave to his first-born son.

155     VALENTINE YESTERDAY

Lingerie’s ill fit…
Someone’s red-faced!
Fine chocolates consumed,
Fancy card misplaced.

Sweet nothings forgotten,
Lovers jilt…
Cupid aims and misses;
Flowers wilt.

Instead cherish the enduring
As I pen you this rhyme:
Our memories aren’t diminished
By the passing of time.

156     FOR TWO AT ONE TIME

Each night a fine man
/  sleeps in your bed,
But is this the notion
/  that dizzies your head?
Tho he’s your life’s partner,
/  commanding your all,
There’s a stealthy nirvana
/  in romance’s call
That bonds from afar,
/  as such can be done…
Some love seems content
/  to dream on the run.
You’re all tied up
/  as mother and wife;
Still a fantasy thrives
/  at the edge of your life,
Raising questions both scary
/  and sweetly sublime…
Can a good woman care
/  for two at one time?
.
.
.

.
157     WAS HE WRONG?

Was it wrong to flaunt a smile
/   while others were feeling sad?
Was it wrong to write poems about her
/   while his world was going mad?
Was he wrong to long for fairy tales
/  when grim truth was all he had?
And was he wrong to fall in love
/  when his timing was so bad?

158     TIME MAY AUTHENTICATE MY DREAMS

The years pass…
Sometimes slowly,
Like sunny colors
/   that fade to white.
More often quickly,
Like screaming sirens
/   that pierce the night.

But pass they will,
And time can authenticate our dreams.

So, my precious friend…
Rejoice for now
/   in the thrill of your youth,
Grow up smiling
/   and discover your truth.
Become the person you were meant to be,
Just save a corner of your heart for me…

Because the years do pass,
And time may authenticate my dreams.

159    MARRIAGE:  PRAYER FOR A FRIEND

We kneel before You, Lord,
And as we do, we can see part of the road ahead.
We can’t see it all, only You know for sure what the future holds,
And perhaps it’s best that way.
We pray for strength in our times of weakness,
We pray for hope in times of despair,
We pray for joy in times of sadness.
We pray that together we might climb the highest mountain,
Run the longest mile, cross the widest desert,
And face every storm with renewed confidence,
Knowing that You will guide us and make us strong.
And Lord, keep us together.
Let the world keep slowly turning,
As the people go ’round and ’round.
But let us stay together, no matter what.
Bring us up when we’re down
And down when we’re up too high.
And help us to know how lucky we are,
For we have each other,
And that alone gives us a jump on the rest of the world.
Be with us, Lord, as we travel the road ahead.
Help us to be able to avoid the holes and the sharp curves along the way.
Help us always to stay on the right road,
And never, ever to turn off.
Give us strength.
Give us love.
Give us life.
Amen.

160    PRAYER FOR A SPECIAL LOVE                                                   *****

May her heart know of the special love
/     that sends me to my knees today:

Now may the sun shine on her
/     long after it sets on the rest of the world.
May the cold north wind miss her house
/     as it blusters by.
May the thundering storm only tap gently
/     at her window pane.
May the roaring sea be as serene
/     as the calm of a country pond.
May her wildest dream of a thousand miles
/     be only a step away.
May the best of her yesterdays
/     fill all her tomorrows with joy,

And may her heart always know of a special love
/     that brings me to my knees this way.

161    THE JOY I FEEL

Quite simply, to me you are love –
The essence of what life was meant to be,
You are the eyes through which I see.
To touch, to care, to dream for awhile –
You know I live for a chance to make you smile.

Quite strange, these hints of forever…
We offer each other our lives to share –
Providing the answer to my one great prayer.
To love, to sleep, to dream for real…
How these words fall short of the joy I feel!

162     FIRST ANNIVERSARY

On love’s
Merry-go-round of emotion
It is especially true:
My best year ever
Was a ride with you.
And on life’s
Roller coaster of uncertainty
It is precious to know:
Today is one down
And a lifetime to go!

163     FULL THROTTLE                                                                     *****

The alluring purr of the motor…
Still a foot’s firm on the brake.
We’ve been coping quite well
/  with some cosmic mistake.

But, oh, those utopian roads
Where what-ifs come to pass –
We’d kick open the throttle
/  on a full tank of gas!

164      I’D BE RICH                                                 *****

You can call my bluff –
Don’t let me walk alone.
Who could have enough
To make it on his own?
Nothing pays love’s price.
(A point the rich concede!)
If you’d roll love’s dice,
We’d win just what we need.

Golden dreams refined –
We’d own the lion’s share.
How is wealth defined?
How could it all compare?
Heaven shows its face
Each time a knot is tied.
Who could earn that grace?
It’s you here by my side!

165     I’D BE RICH  (REPRISE)

Thank you, romance!
Sweet circumstance…
We took a chance.
Good life endowed;
If money talks,
Love sings aloud.
Yes, we shout it loud!
No need to buy/sell/trade
Or be marketwise;
We realize
No worldly prize
Could ever do –
I’m rich with you.

166      YOU

No topic has been so sublime…
Yes, I write of you often,
But not this time!
As another day dawns
To ask what’s in store,
I scratch the same old itch;
I’ve been here before.
Yet to be stuck in this rut,
To have sought something new…
Is to hope these lines
Find their way back to you!
