Big 12 Expansion, Saunders, Fitzgerald

**  Will the Big 12 expand?  To 16 teams?  14?

**  The most likely scenario is 12 teams, one of which will be Houston.  Brigham Young could be the other, but a coalition of LGBT groups is fighting the idea because of discriminatory practices by the Mormon school.

**  From a letter to Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby:
.            “BYU…actively and openly discriminates against its LGBT students and staff.  It provides
.              no protections for LGBT students…Given BYU’s homophobic, biphobic and transphobic
.              policies and practices, BYU should not be rewarded with Big 12 membership.”

**  ESPN sportscaster John Saunders has died at the age of 61.  No cause of death has been given, and the demise of the warm and friendly Saunders was not expected.

**  Saunders joined ESPN 30 years ago and hosted the popular “The Sports Reporters” for the last 15 years.

**  His work on college football on fall Saturdays will long be remembered.  The new season just around the corner will not be the same without him.

**  Redshirt freshman quarterback Jimmy Fitzgerald is leaving the Illinois football team.  He was a three-star recruit who had enrolled early at Illinois in February of 2015.

**  Fitzgerald becomes the second quarterback to leave Illinois recently.  True freshman Eli Peters enrolled in February of this year and went through spring practice but transferred to Toledo in June when Illinois underwent a coaching change from Bill Cubit to Lovie Smith.
