Help for the Flooded, Georgia Southern Punished, Michigan vs Notre Dame

**  Alabama coach Nick Saban and Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher are both from West Virginia.  So, when last month’s flooding heavily damaged several high schools in their native state, the two men decided to help out.  Both have requested that high schools in their states donate one entire football uniform by the 25th of this month.  Included in the uniform will be full pads, helmets and practice jerseys.  Everything collected will be transported to West Virginia to support high school football programs that have been placed under duress by losses sustained in the devastating floods.

**  The NCAA has handed down two years of probation on Georgia Southern.  The football program will lose two scholarships, among other penalties.  In two separate incidents, three football players received improper academic assistance; they were guilty of claiming academic work was their own when it wasn’t.
**  An assistant compliance director and an assistant director of student-athlete services, both female, have lost their jobs.

**  Michigan and Notre Dame will resume one of the greatest rivalries in college football.  The Wolverines will play at Notre Dame on September 1, 2018, and the Irish will go to the Big House on October 26, 2019.
**  The two teams last played in September of 2014, with Notre Dame rolling to a shockingly easy 31-0 win.
**  The series started in 1887.  Michigan leads it with 24 wins against 17 losses with one tie.
**  To make room on its schedule, Michigan opted out of a scheduled home-and-home series with Arkansas and must pay the SEC school $2,000,000.
**  Notre Dame canceled the series with Michigan in 2012, wiping out games in 2015, 2016 and 2017.  Two of the three were due to be played at Michigan.
**  Michigan and Notre Dame are the two winningest programs in the history of college football.
**  In praising the decision to play, Michigan coach Jim Haraugh noted it’s just a 2 to 2½-hour bus ride from one school to the other and called it “good for football, good for the players, and good for the fans.”
**  What he didn’t say:  The victor could use the signature win as a springboard to the College Football Playoff.
