** Alabama football players Cam Robinson and Lawrence “Hootie” Jones were arrested on May 17 in their hometown of Monroe, Louisiana. They were in a public park at 2:30 a.m. when they were taken into custody and charged with possession of drugs and handguns. The drug was marijuana, and only half a gram. It and a handgun were in plain view in their vehicle; in fact, Robinson alerted the police officer to the handgun in his lap as he sat at the steering wheel. A stolen handgun was found under the passenger seat.
** On Monday of this week the Louisiana district attorney announced that the charges have been dropped due to insufficient evidence. One factor was that they couldn’t prove who had actually put the stolen handgun under the seat. Also, it could not be determined who actually had possession of the marijuana. (There were others in the vehicle besides Robinson and Jones.)
** The curious statement by Louisiana district attorney Jerry Jones: “I refuse to ruin the lives of two young men who have spent their adolescence…working and sweating while we were all in the air conditioning.”
** And Alabama coach Nick Saban’s weigh-in: “Discipline…is how you change somebody’s behavior so they have a better chance to be successful.”
** Ah, yes, the long arm of the law.
** Robinson was an all-SEC left tackle, having started every game since his freshman year in 2014. He’s 6’6″ and 325 pounds. Jones has been a reserve in his first two years at Alabama. He was a top prospect at safety coming out of high school.
