** Around 9:00 yesterday morning (3/18/16) Miami of Florida’s Jon Semerene crashed his vehicle into a car stopped at a red light, failed sobriety tests, refused a breathalyzer and was arrested for drunk driving. Later that day he was kicked off the team by new coach Mark Richt, who had consulted with athletic director Blake James. Semerene was due in court in May on a different DUI charge from September of 2014 when he was not a member of the football team.
** Semerene, 20, was a walk-on who kicked off last season as a sophomore. Twenty-six of his 64 kickoffs (over 40%) went for touchbacks. Placekicker Michael Badgeley and punter Justin Vogel handled the other 13 Hurricane kickoffs; both are now candidates to kick off in 2016.
** Semerene is the third Miami football player to run afoul of the law in the last week. Offensive linemen Trevor Darling and Jahair Jones were arrested together March 10 for resisting an officer.
Jones’ charge was subsequently dropped due to a technicality; the State Attorney’s Office in Dade County may re-file the charges.
** Spring practice continued this morning under Richt. It is closed to the public.
