** Jim Herbstreit, captain of Ohio State’s football team in 1960, died Thursday in Cleveland. He was 77 and had Alzheimer’s.
** Herbstreit was a running back and defensive back in his playing days. Though his coaching career in the Sixties was brief, he was on Woody Hayes’ staff at Ohio State with Bo Schembechler. When Schembechler became head coach at Miami of Ohio in 1963, he took Herbstreit with him.
** Herbstreit was the father of ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit, who was also a team captain at Ohio State. Kirk was a quarterback in Columbus and was named captain in 1992,
thirty-two years after his dad. The only other father/son pairs to be Ohio State captains were Jim and Jeff Davidson and Pepper and Dionte Johnson.
** Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh’s classy and respectful note on Twitter to Kirk read, “Thoughts and prayers R with the Herbstreit family on the passing of Jim Herbstreit former OSU captain & member of Bo’s original staff at Miami.”
** Many others offered their support as well. Kirk Herbstreit, also on Twitter: “Overwhelmed by the well wishes about my Dads passing. I truly am. Thanks to every single one of you. God Bless.”
