New Coaches for 2015: John Bonamego at Central Michigan

Name:  John Bonamego
Team:  Central Michigan Chippewas
Replaces:  Dan Enos, who resigned after five seasons to become offensive coordinator at Arkansas.
.       He bolted Mount Pleasant for Fayetteville less than a week before National Signing Day;
.       Bonamego was the last coach to be hired for 2015 in all of FBS.
Previous Head Coaching Experience:  None.
Personal:  Will turn 52 just before the season starts.  In June Bonamego was diagnosed with cancer
.       in his left tonsil, but it was caught early and is treatable.  Wife Paulette, three kids:  Javier,
.      Giovanni, Bellina.
** Bonamego played wide receiver and quarterback at Central Michigan in the 1980s.  Coaching the
.    Chippewas is his “dream job.”
** His nickname is Bono.  On his hiring at Central Michigan he quipped that, unlike U2’s lead
.    singer, he had “found what I’m looking for.”
** Eleven years as a college assistant preceded the last 16 years coaching special teams in the NFL.
** Some thought this job would go to Brady Hoke, but Hoke is reportedly taking a year off to spend
.    time with family.
** Critics question the wisdom of hiring a career special teams coach and point out that the
.    Detroit Lions’ special teams – Bonamego’s most recent NFL gig – weren’t really very good.
