New Coaches for 2015: Jim McElwain at Florida

Name:  Jim McElwain
Team:  Florida Gators
Replaces:  Will Muschamp, who is now the defensive coordinator at Auburn.
Previous Head Coaching Experience:  Went 22-16 the past three years at Colorado State,
.       but the Rams showed steady improvement.  Record went from four wins to eight to 10 during
.       McElwain’s tenure.
Personal:  Age 53.  Wife Karen, two daughters and one son.  Son Jerret, now 19, was severely
.                 burned  when he was 7 after getting too close to an open fireplace and wound up in
.                 a Louisville hospital’s ICU for a week followed by 11 weeks in the burn unit.
** Jim was quarterback at Eastern Washington from 1980 to 1983; his coaching career began with
.    eight years at his alma mater.
** He also coached at Montana State, Louisville, Michigan State and Fresno State.  There was
.    one year in the NFL (2006) as quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders.
** McElwain was Nick Saban’s offensive coordinator at Alabama from 2008 through 2011.
** McElwain was the Mountain West’s coach of the year in 2014.
** Florida has not been good offensively since Urban Meyer’s last season in 2010.  And there is
.    no obvious answer at quarterback.
** McElwain’s hiring was not met with much enthusiasm by Gator faithful.  Said AD Jeremy Foley,
.    “I always wished Steve Spurrier would be our coach forever.”
** Looks like an uphill battle for Florida’s new head man.
