Five Years of Bowls, Part 2: Offense

Five teams have scored 62 points or more in a bowl game in the past five years.

West Virginia 70, Clemson 33
Orange Bowl…January 4, 2012
*Mountaineers scored 49 points in the first half, a bowl record for points in a half.
*The 70 points broke the record for most points in a bowl game.  Baylor had set the record six days earlier.
*Geno Smith tied a bowl record by throwing six touchdown passes.  Tavon Austin had four touchdown receptions to become only the fourth player in bowl history to accomplish that.
*West Virginia, which had 589 yards of total offense, had scored seven points in a bowl loss the year before.

Baylor 67, Washington 56
Alamo Bowl…December 29, 2011
*The two teams combined for a bowl record 123 points in a regulation game.
*Baylor accumulated 777 yards of total offense.
*Washington outscored Baylor 35 to 3 in one stretch in the middle of the game but was outscored
64 to 21 in the rest of the game.
*Baylor had Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III at quarterback, but he was overshadowed by teammate Terrance Ganaway, who rushed for 200 yards.  Ganaway ran for five touchdowns in the second half, including an 89-yarder.
*The 1,397 combined total yards and the game’s 17 touchdowns are both bowl records.
*After the game Washington fired three defensive coaches, including coordinator Nick Holt.

Toledo 63, Arkansas State 44
Go Daddy Bowl…January 4, 2015
*The teams combined for more than 1000 yards of total offense.
*The Rockets’ Kareem Hunt scored five rushing touchdowns.

Arizona State 62, Navy 28
Fight Hunger Bowl…December 29, 2012
*Arizona State had all 62 points by the end of the third quarter to lead 62-14.
*Sun Devil quarterback Taylor Kelly completed 17 of 19 throws for 268 yards and four touchdowns, but teammate Marion Grice ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns to be named the game’s offensive MVP.
*ASU’s 36 first downs tied a bowl game record.

Tulsa 62, Hawaii 35
Hawaii Bowl…December 24, 2010
*At the half Tulsa had been outgained 273 to 95 but led 27-14.
*Hawaii threw two first-half pick-sixes and another interception was returned to the 3-yard line, leading to an easy score for the Golden Hurricane.
